Wednesday Muse August 10, 2016 The Neighborhood Gang When I came across this photo it made me remember our Neighborhood Gang.  If you were a kid in the late 60's, 70's and 80's you'd recognized this photo immediately, different aged kids, male and female just hanging out in the summer time. There were no computers, no video games, just endless sunshine, warmth and fun that lasted a little over two months before returning to school.  Growing up in NM there were a lot of kids whose Dads were in the Military but also other professions, one Dad owned a Kinney's Shoes. Another was a Preacher, yet somehow all these kids from different walks of life got along and played together for hours at a time and had to be called in with veiled threats at nightfall by our parents. If our parents weren't so insistent we probably would have slept outside too, after Dinner of course. A typical Summer day in my NM neighborhood consisted of either a swimming lesson or

Derik Lattig-Muse-August 9, 2016 Don't Pay the Ferryman MTV turned 35 last week. For a kid like me growing up in the 70's and early 80's imagine the shock of turning on one of the defunct cable channels normally filled with static to find music videos streaming back to back 24 hours a day.  Back then the only videos up to that point were seen on Saturday Nights either local shows or TBS' Night Tracks in which you never saw the guy and gal announcer but they always intro'd the music video. Which, by the way, consisted mainly of bands on stage playing their hits, not the elaborate animation, 'mini movies' we were soon to see.  One of those 'mini dramas' I always found interesting was the song ' Don't Pay the Ferryman' by Chris De Burgh. What a mix of mysticism along with Rock and his Irish accent made this song all the better. I remember many a discussion around the Basketball Court or Tennis Courts as a teen as t

Logo Staying Power August 6, 2016  I posted the above logo on my Facebook page, 'Albuquerque Memories' this week and was surprised that out of all the photos posted showing my home town over the years, how many shares and likes and comments this one brought. As a kid we saw this on the backs of milk cartons, mom's cookbooks and on the 'tuit' handed out at the State Fair. That was one of those rubber things you used to get the lid off a stubborn jar. What great marketing back then that nearly 50 years later has stuck with many. Turns out  Reddy Kilowatt is a branding character that acted as corporate spokesman for electricity generation in the United States and other countries for over seven decades. The above logo was slightly changed for regions. In Texas he wore a Cowboy hat, back East and out West a Hardhat.  I wonder what logo or branding kids today will remember 50 years from now? Whomever came up with Reddy Kilowatt must be looking down from Heaven w

A Hollywood ICON Missing; Nation goes into Mourning! DALLAS, Texas - In a story made for the movies; author ’ s Derik Lattig and Emily Regan spotlight a true life drama about a pilot ’ s adventure with the MGM lion and his trainer. ‘ Family Pride ’ tells the story of hot-shot pilot, Martin Jensen, and MGM ’ s lion trainer Melvin Koontz, in the latter part of the roaring 1920 ’ s. When MGM studio head L.B.
