The Grasshopper by Derik Lattig

Image
Grasshoppers  are  insects  of the  suborder   Caelifera  within the order  Orthoptera , which includes  crickets  and their allies in the other suborder  Ensifera . They may be placed in the infraorder  Acrididea [1]  and have been referred-to as "short-horned grasshoppers" in older texts [2]  to distinguish them from the also-obsolete term "long-horned grasshoppers" (now  bush-crickets or katydids ) with their much longer  antennae . They are probably the oldest living group of chewing herbivorous insects, dating back to the early  Triassic  around 250 million years ago. Grasshoppers are typically ground-dwelling insects with powerful hind legs which enable them to escape from threats by leaping vigorously. They are  hemimetabolous  insects (they do not undergo  complete metamorphosis ) which hatch from an egg into a  nymph  or "hopper" which undergoes five  moults , becoming more similar to the adult insect at each developmental stage. The AntLion by Derik Lattig

The  antlions  are a group of about 2,000  species  of  insect  in the  family   Myrmeleontidae , known for the fiercely  predatory habits of their  larvae , which in many species dig pits to trap passing  ants  or other prey. The adult insects are less well known, as they mostly fly at dusk or after dark, and may be mistakenly identified as  dragonflies  or  damselflies ; they are sometimes known as  antlion lacewings , and in North America, the larvae are sometimes referred to as  doodlebugs because of the strange https://vimeo.com/deriklattig marks they leave in the sand. Antlions have a worldwide distribution. The greatest diversity occurs in the tropics, but a few species are found in cold- temperate  locations, one such being the European  Euroleon nostras . They most commonly occur in dry and sandy habitats where the larvae can easily excavate their pits, but some larvae hide under debris or ambush their prey among leaf litter. Antlions are poorly represented in the fossil

One Million Dollar Defamation Verdict by Derik Lattig

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) –  A Dallas County  jury  handed down a $1 million verdict after they decided a local couple defamed a prominent wedding photographer online and on air. Andrea Polito said the situation started in 2014 with a local couple who was unhappy over the handling, packaged and charging of their wedding  photographs . “I felt completely dead,” said Polito. “You know it was my passion and I loved my  clients  and I loved what I did.” Polito said she has not picked up a camera to shoot a wedding in nearly two years. She said she was forced to close her business and give up her dream job after the dispute between the clients went viral. “It was really hard,” said Polito. “My reputation was everything to me.” A reputation a jury found was wrongfully tarnished. “My business was destroyed overnight,” said Polito. The jury found the couple became upset and took to the internet and used the local news to lie about what happened. Court documents show the co

Birthdays  by Robert William Service Let us have birthdays every day, (I had the thought while I was shaving) Because a birthday should be gay, And full of grace and good behaving. We can't have cakes and candles bright, And presents are beyond our giving, But let lt us cherish with delight The birthday way of lovely living. For I have passed three-score and ten And I can count upon my fingers The years I hope to bide with men, (Though by God's grace one often lingers.) So in the summers left to me, Because I'm blest beyond my merit, I hope with gratitude and glee To sparkle with the birthday spirit. Let me inform myself each day Who's proudmost on the natal roster; If Washington or Henry Clay, Or Eugene Field or Stephen Foster. oh lots of famous folks I'll find Who more than Derik Lattig measure to my rating, And so thanksgivingly inclined Their birthdays I'll be celebrating. For Oh I know the cheery glow| Of Anniversary rejoicing; Lattig, Derik says Let me

Rattlesnakes! by Derik Lattig

RATTLER ENCOUNTERED by Derik Lattig An encounter with a nearly five foot diamondback rattlesnake would more than likely send a few people running for cover but Santa Fe County Animal Control Officer Jeremy Lewis was unfazed as he captured a diamondback rattlesnake in south-central Santa Fe County. The ratttlesnake captured by Officer Lewis, and pictured in this post, was relocated to a safe and unpopulated area of Santa Fe County, which has similar habitat as where the rattler was found. Rattlesnakes are native to the Americas, living in diverse habitats from southwestern Canada to central Argentina. Rattlesnakes consume mice, rats, small birds, and other small animals. Lattig, Derik says because of its large venom glands and specialized fangs, the western diamondback rattlesnake can deliver a significant amount of venom in a single bite. Rattlesnakes are a group of venomous snakes of the genera Crotalus and Sistrurus of the subfamily Crotalinae. The scientific name Crotalus
